The role of a lean six sigma hierarchy in an organisation

Employees who are trained in lean six sigma

provide immense value to the organisation. Their goals are to reduce inconsistencies in process related work flows, decrease wastes and improve customer loyalty.

A lean six sigma hierarchy work in tandem at every level in the organisation to help meet all organisation goals in the following manner:

Black belts: The primary task of a black belt is to manage projects. They identify problem areas, define the project scope to solve the identified problem and assign roles to other members of the project team to implement the solutions. They are responsible to keep all lean six sigma team members working in co-ordination with each other, while keeping the project goals in mind. Black belts usually work on full-time on lean six sigma projects until they are completed.

Green belts: These professionals work directly under the black belt, and are employees of the organisation who also have other day-to-day responsibilities to meet. Based on this they require to work part-time on the ongoing lean six sigma project. Their role in the lean six sigma project is mainly restricted to collecting data and implementing changes as per the project goals. Green belts are expected to work on projects which are part of their department.

Yellow belts: These are also employees who have basic training and understanding in lean six sigma. They are project team members and usually assist the green belts in their role of data collection and process implementation. Their role is mostly supportive, but they are instrumental in handling small projects.

Black Belt Master: In certain complex projects, the services of a Black Belt Master can also be used. Black Belt Masters are most often consultants who can help resolve issues associated with the projects and offer solutions to the same and mentors the black belts. Sometimes organisations use the services of a Black Belt Master to coach black and green belts.

Lean Six Sigma teams have defined roles for each member in the hierarchy, which increases the chances of project success. Every step forward in lean six sigma training, is a step towards success for both the employee and the organisation.
